Learn how to water your plants while on vacation, using our Automated Watering System!

Hello and welcome back for another Episode of GreenBox Grown!  Today I am going to be showing you how to set up an Automated Watering System so you can leave your Cannabis Grow for several weeks at a time.  If you follow the steps I am about to show you, your plants will be properly watered to perfection while you are away on vacation!

The first thing I would like to discuss is the setup I am using.  It cost me about $30 and will be good for 2-3 plants total.  If you visit the GreenBox Grown Supply shop on our website, you can purchase this system there.  What I am using is a 5 gallon bucket, and a watering pump which comes with a timer.

The pump itself clips onto the side of the water bucket, and from there sucks up the water when the timer goes off.  You set the timer for what days it will water and for how long at a time.  For example, when I am on vacation I set the pump to water every other day for 45 seconds each time.  This way there is enough water provided without overwatering, and you give the plants enough time to dry out before watering again.

The pump is only large enough for the depth of a 5 gallon bucket, but I have found there are other plastic containers out there with the same depth but much more area.  I have a container that actually holds 23 Gallons of water, which would be enough for over a month of watering my cannabis plants!

Once you have the pump set up with a watering bucket, all you need to do is take the hoses, connect them to the pump, and then stake them around your plants.  As you will see in the video, I usually put around 3-4 hoses total in each pot, so I can water different areas of the root zone.  You can have a max of 10 hoses set up with this particular pump.  I recommend only using pH water with this pump and not nutrients, since you can only water nutrients once every couple of times.  With pH water, you can use that strictly for a few weeks to a month at a time without any nutrients, and your plants will be completely fine.  I recommend not going too much longer than 3 weeks of just plain pH water as the plants will start to show signs of nutrient deficiencies and will be affected in a negative way.

Another important thing to think about is where you leave the bucket of water.  If you are growing outside in a greenhouse, try to keep the bucket in the shade so the water does not get hot.  Feeding your cannabis plants hot water can be very damaging.  Also, whether you grow indoor or outdoors, be sure to keep a lid over your water bucket so no dust or other particles settle in the water.  You want the water to stay as clean as possible.  If you are growing in a greenhouse, I recommend covering it up with your blackout tarp and turning the light schedule to be on for full time.  Leave the vents open so it does not get too hot inside and their is proper airflow.  What this will do is automate your grow for the duration of your vacation.  Setting your lights to be on for the full lighting schedule makes it so you don't have to uncover your plants and worry about covering at the right time.  Yes it will cost more in electricity, but it is the best you can do when you need to leave for an extended period of time.

Thank you for reading and HAPPY GROWING!
